Central Siberia's Geography |
The largest part of Siberia can be found between Yenissei River and an imaginary border near River Lena and Lake Baikal. Central Siberia is even more mountainous. In the north, the central Siberian mountain range reaches as far as the North Polar Sea and the islands of Severnaia Semlia; in the east, you can find the western part of Jakutsk, which reaches far [east] into the northern part of East Siberia and which is rich of natural resources, such as ore, coal, gold and diamonds.
In the south, you will find the Sajan Mountains, which are bordering Mongolia. Yenissei River arises in the western part of those mountians, and Lake Baikal - the largest and with 1.600m also the deepest body of fresh water in the world - can be found east of the Saian Mountains.
Economically speaking, the most important sectors are the lumber industry and the hydropower industry in the regions near Krasnojarsk and Irkutsk as well as in Buryatia which is located east of Lake Baikal and whose capital is called Ulan Ude. |
